Presenting experimental film requires the projectionist to expand their awareness of the medium just as much (if not more) than the viewer.

  • Often small gauge
  • Variable speed?
  • Prepping for programs of shorts (keeping careful track of "last image" and whether or not there's sound)
  • Awareness of the desires of the filmmaker: do they want a silent track played with sound? Are there notes on or in the can?
  • Dual projection
  • Lack of frame lines
  • Projecting the leader or not? (cf. lostleaders.ca)
  • Focus complications
